Create Your Tags
Tags help Seam Allowance connect your materials and styles to the correct inventory. Create your tags before adding fabrics and styles so those records can use the information already in your library.
How to add a tag
- Open Library, then select Tags.
- Choose the tag type you want to create: Brand, Content, or Size.
- Enter the name and any other information requested for that tag type.
- Add the cost per unit when it applies.
- Set a low-stock threshold. Seam Allowance will alert you when the quantity falls below this number.
- Add a supplier or note if useful. These fields are optional.
- Select Add Tag.
Choosing a tag type
| Tag type | Use it for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Brand | The brand label used on a finished garment | Your main company label |
| Content | The fibre-content label connected to a fabric | 55% linen / 45% cotton |
| Size | The sizes available for your styles | XS, S, M, L |
Helpful tip: Choose a low-stock threshold that gives you enough time to reorder tags before production is affected.

Add a Fabric
Add each fabric to your library so Seam Allowance can use its details when you plan production and estimate material requirements.
Before you begin
Have the fabric name, supplier, fibre content, colourway, width, unit of measure, cutting direction, and cost ready if possible.
How to add a fabric
- Open Library, then select Fabrics.
- Enter a clear name for the fabric.
- Add the supplier, if known.
- Select the correct content tag. This connects the fabric to its fibre-content label.
- Enter the colourway.
- Enter the fabric width as accurately as possible.
- Select the unit used to purchase and track the fabric, such as metres.
- Choose one-way or two-way cutting.
- Enter the fabric cost per unit.
- Add the roll size if you track it. This field is optional.
- Select Add Fabric.
Why accuracy matters: Fabric width and cutting direction affect the amount Seam Allowance estimates you will need. Incorrect values can produce an inaccurate production estimate.

Understand Fabric Width & Cutting Direction
Seam Allowance uses fabric width and cutting direction to create a more realistic estimate of how much fabric a style may require.
Fabric width
The style’s fabric yield is based on a standard fabric width. In the tutorial, the standard range is approximately 50 to 60 inches. When a selected fabric is narrower, Seam Allowance increases the estimated requirement to account for the reduced cutting area.
For example, if a style uses 1 metre per piece at the standard width, choosing a much narrower fabric will increase the estimated amount per piece.
Cutting direction
| Option | Choose it when | Effect on the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Two-way cutting | Pattern pieces can be placed in either direction, as with many solid fabrics. | No directional-cutting allowance is added. |
| One-way cutting | Pattern pieces must face the same direction because of a stripe, print, nap, or other directional feature. | An additional fabric allowance is added. |
One-way cutting allowance: In the tutorial, one-way cutting adds 25% to the fabric requirement. A base yield of 1 metre therefore becomes an estimated 1.25 metres per piece.

Add a Style
Your style library contains the products you plan to manufacture. Each style stores the information Seam Allowance needs when you add that product to a project or production order.
Before you begin
Have the style number, product type, style name, cut-and-sew price, fabric yield per piece, available sizes, and brand tag ready.
How to add a style
- Open Library, then select Styles.
- Enter the style number or code.
- Enter the product type and style name.
- Add the cut-and-sew price provided by your factory.
- Enter the fabric yield per piece for a standard-width fabric.
- Select the sizes available for this style. These options come from the size tags you created earlier.
- Select the appropriate brand tag.
- Select Add Style.
Helpful tip: A style does not need to use every size in your size library. Select only the sizes offered for that product. You do not need to select a content tag here when it is already connected to the fabric.

Enter Your Starting Inventory
Adding tags and fabrics to your library creates the records Seam Allowance will use, but it does not tell the system how much stock you have. Enter your current quantities in Inventory before planning production.
Enter your tag stock
- Open Inventory, then go to Tag Stock.
- Review the tags created in your library. New tags will initially show a quantity of zero.
- Enter the quantity currently available for each tag.
- Review any low-stock alerts. An alert appears when a quantity is below its threshold.
- Save your changes.
Enter your fabric orders
- Open the fabric-order area in Inventory.
- Select the fabric you want to update.
- Enter the quantity ordered or currently available using the correct unit of measure.
- Add the total fabric cost, shipping, and taxes if available.
- If final costs are not yet known, enter the quantity first and return later to update the costs from the invoice.
- Save your changes, then repeat for the remaining fabrics.
Important: A library record and an inventory quantity are not the same thing. Your tags and fabrics must exist in the library, and their quantities must also be entered in Inventory for availability checks during production planning.

Quick Guides
Need help with one part of the production-order workflow? Open a guide below for clear, step-by-step instructions, or use the timestamp to find that section in the full tutorial.
Add a Production Partner
Add your production partner before creating a project so their information can be selected and carried into the production order.
How to add a production partner
- Open Partners from the main navigation.
- Choose the option to add a Production Partner rather than a supplier.
- Enter the production contact and company information.
- Review the details for accuracy.
- Select Add Contact.
Helpful tip: Add every factory or production contact you regularly work with. When you create a project, you can select the correct production house and Seam Allowance will pull its information into the production order.

Create a New Project
Once your library, inventory, and production partner are ready, create a project to hold the styles, fabrics, quantities, and production-order details for the production run.
How to create a project
- Open Projects from the main navigation.
- Select the option to start a New Project.
- Enter the project details shown on the form.
- Select the appropriate Production House.
- Confirm that the production contact information has populated correctly.
- Continue to the styles section of the project.
If the production house is missing: Return to Partners, add the production contact, and then reopen the project.

Add Styles and Fabrics
Pull styles and fabrics from your existing libraries, then enter an approximate piece count to perform the first availability check.
Add your styles
- In the project, go to the Styles section.
- Select a style from your style library.
- Enter the retail price if you want it included in the project.
- Select Add Style.
- Repeat these steps for every style in the production run.
Assign fabrics and estimate quantities
- Open the drop-down for the first style.
- Select the fabric or fabrics that will be used for that style.
- Enter an approximate piece count for each fabric.
- Review any availability alert shown by Seam Allowance.
- Repeat the process for the remaining styles.
- Open the Fabric Ordering tab.
- Review the estimated fabric requirement and approximate cost.
How the estimate works: Seam Allowance applies the width and cutting-direction information saved in the fabric library. A narrow fabric or one-way cutting direction can increase the estimated requirement.

Set Quantities & Resolve Inventory Warnings
Use the production-order section to add manufacturing instructions and set the final quantities by style and size. Seam Allowance will compare those quantities with your available fabric and tag inventory.
Add the production instructions
- Open the Production Order section of the project.
- Confirm that the correct production house has loaded.
- Enter any tag specifications.
- Add trim details where needed. Details can apply to the entire style when appropriate.
- Add any other production notes.
Enter and check the quantities
- Enter the required quantity for each style, fabric, and size combination.
- Review the order for inventory warnings.
- If a fabric warning appears, reduce the quantity or update the available fabric inventory.
- If a brand, content, or size-tag warning appears, reduce the quantity or add the incoming tag stock to Inventory.
- Return to the project after updating Inventory.
- Confirm that the warning has cleared before continuing.
Understanding the warnings
| Warning | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric shortage | The order requires more fabric than is currently available. | Piece quantities, fabric assignment, and available fabric inventory. |
| Brand-tag shortage | There are not enough brand labels for the planned pieces. | Brand-tag stock and the total number of garments. |
| Content-tag shortage | There are not enough fibre-content labels for the selected fabrics. | Content-tag stock and each fabric’s connected content tag. |
| Size-tag shortage | One or more sizes require more size tags than are available. | Size-level quantities and size-tag stock. |
Helpful tip: Use the approximate piece count as an early checkpoint, then use the final size-level quantities for the detailed inventory check.
Tutorial timestamp: 02:54
Save and Export the Production Order
Save the order if you need to return later, then export it in the format that works best for your production partner.
Save and export
- Save the production order before leaving the project.
- When it is ready to share, choose Export as CSV or Export as PDF.
- Choose PDF when you want a formatted production document.
- Review the exported document before sending it.
- Confirm that the business name, production-house information, project details, tag specifications, trim details, quantities, and totals are correct.
- Download the file and send it to the production company.
Helpful tip: Save the project even when the order is not finished. You can return later to adjust fabrics, quantities, specifications, or notes before exporting the final version.
Tutorial timestamp: 04:49
Complete the Order & Update Inventory
Complete the production order only when it is final and ready to be reflected in your inventory. Completing it deducts the required fabric and tag quantities from stock.
How to complete the order
- Perform one final review of the styles, fabrics, sizes, quantities, and specifications.
- Select Complete Production Order.
- Read the confirmation warning carefully.
- Confirm that you want to complete the order and deduct its quantities.
- Wait for confirmation that the production order is complete and inventory has been updated.
- Open Inventory and verify the new fabric and tag quantities.
Important: Do not complete an order while it is still a draft. Saving preserves the work for later; completing the order applies its inventory deductions.
Tutorial timestamp: 05:24
Review Inventory to confirm the updated fabric and tag quantities, then return to Projects whenever you are ready to plan the next production run.
